Overview
Why study in Sweden?
Sweden's higher education follows the Bologna three-cycle structure of bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees, with credits that map one-to-one to ECTS: 60 credits equal one full academic year. Applications for almost all programmes go through a single national admissions portal run by UHR, which also handles recognition of foreign qualifications. For Indian applicants, Class 12 is generally accepted for bachelor's entry, subject to subject-specific requirements. Swedish is the official language, and many master's programmes are taught in English. Students from outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland pay tuition fees, which vary by subject and institution. Sweden is in the EU and the Schengen Area but keeps its own currency, so fees are charged in Swedish krona (SEK). The main intake starts in late August; a smaller spring intake starts in January, though not every programme has one. Autumn applications close in mid-January. In Stockholm, January temperatures average -3.0 to 1.6°C and July 13.5 to 22.1°C, with 18.63 hours of daylight on 21 June and 6.07 hours on 21 December.

Before you travel
Student visa

The permit is a residence permit for studies at higher education from Migrationsverket (the Migration Agency), not a visa. Apply after admission and before you travel.
Read the full guidance
You must show SEK 10,656 per month (rate for applications made in 2026) for the entire study period, not one year, from bank assets, a scholarship, home-country student grants or loans, a sponsor or employment income. The SEK 1,500 application fee is not refunded if refused. Studies shorter than one year need comprehensive health insurance. A permit lasts one or two years at most. Since 11 June 2026, you must earn 37.5 credits in year one and 45 a year after that, or the permit can be revoked or an extension refused.
