Overview
Why study in Hungary?
Hungary has been in the European Union since 2004 and the Schengen Area since 2007, and is part of the European Higher Education Area. Degrees follow the Bologna three-cycle structure (bachelor, master, doctorate) and use ECTS credits; 60 ECTS equals one full academic year. The official language is Hungarian. English-taught programmes are widely offered, but daily life outside Budapest is in Hungarian. Hungary uses the forint (HUF), not the euro: tuition may be quoted in euros, while living costs are paid in forints. The Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship, funded by the Hungarian Government since 2013, offers tuition-free study and a monthly stipend (HUF 43,700 for bachelor's and master's students in 2026/27) that does not cover full living costs. Applicants must be nominated by their own country's Sending Partner. The 2026/27 deadline was 15 January 2026; the 2027/28 date had not been published by 24 September 2026. The climate is continental: average January lows are below freezing in Budapest, Debrecen, Pécs, Szeged and Győr, and average July highs there are 27.9 to 30.3 °C.

Before you travel
Student visa
Get your student visa with a simple and transparent process.
Students from outside the EU need a residence permit for the purpose of studies, issued by Hungary's National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing (NDGAP). For Indian applicants: Indian nationals are visa-required and must apply for the permit at a Hungarian diplomatic or consular mission before arrival.
Read the full guidance
The application fee is EUR 110 at a consular mission (HUF 39,000 in person in Hungary, HUF 24,000 through Enter Hungary, HUF 23,000 for an extension). A study-permit holder cannot be granted a family-reunification permit, so a spouse cannot join on the study route; there is a narrow exception for a child born during the studies.
