Study in France
Bachelor's and master's study in France, in French or English
French degrees follow the Bologna three-cycle structure of the European Higher Education Area: bachelor (licence), master and doctorate.
Overview
Why study in France?
French degrees follow the Bologna three-cycle structure of the European Higher Education Area: bachelor (licence), master and doctorate. Credits are counted in ECTS: 60 ECTS is one full academic year, a licence is 180 ECTS and a master is 120 ECTS. The national framework is the Cadre national des certifications professionnelles, referenced to the EQF. France is in the EU and the Schengen area and uses the euro.
Public universities teach in French. Many private schools, including grandes ecoles and business schools, teach in English; check the language of each programme. Public universities charge non-EU students higher registration rates, which many institutions waive. Campus France administers French government scholarships.
The main intake is September. Some private schools also run a smaller January intake; confirm it for each programme.
In Paris, temperatures average 1.8 to 7.4 °C in January and 15.0 to 25.1 °C in July, with about 827 mm of rain a year. In January, Nice on the Mediterranean averages 5.2 to 12.8 °C and Lille in the north 1.6 to 6.8 °C.

Before you travel
Student visa
Get your student visa with a simple and transparent process.
The student visa is the VLS-TS etudiant, a long-stay visa that also serves as your residence permit once it is validated, so there is one document, not two. For Indian applicants: the Campus France "Etudes en France" procedure must be completed before the consulate will accept a visa application, so start it months ahead.

Applicants show proof of funds of about EUR 615 per month (about EUR 6,150 for a ten-month year); confirm the current amount when you apply. After arrival, the VLS-TS must be validated online within three months. If it is not validated, it becomes invalid.

While you study
Work while studying
Earn, gain experience and build your future.
- Students holding a VLS-TS etudiant can work up to 964 hours per year, set at 60% of the legal annual working time.
- This is often described as about 20 hours a week, but the limit is annual, not weekly, so more hours can be worked during vacations.
More on working here
- The right to work comes with the student residence permit itself, so no separate work permit is needed.
