Overview
Why study in Austria?
Austria has been a member of the European Union since 1995, is part of the Schengen Area and uses the euro (EUR). It belongs to the European Higher Education Area, which uses the Bologna three-cycle structure of bachelor, master and doctorate, and study is measured in ECTS credits, with 60 ECTS equal to one full academic year. Institutions include universities, universities of applied sciences and private universities accredited under the Private Higher Education Act. The official language is German: public universities teach mainly in German at bachelor level, while English-taught programmes are mostly at master level and at private universities. Public universities charge non-EU students a tuition fee of EUR 726.72 per semester. Austria has two main climates: the Danube lowland around Vienna and Linz, and the Alps around Innsbruck and Salzburg. In Vienna, January temperatures typically range from -1.1 to 4.9 °C and July from 17.1 to 27.3 °C, with about 26 cm of snow a year; Innsbruck receives about 218 cm.
