Complementary courses provide students with advanced training in a specialized area of biomedical engineering selected from the areas where Departmental staff have significant expertise. In cases where students have taken one or more of the core courses as part of another program, these core courses will be replaced with the equivalent number of credits, at the 500 level or higher, by other appropriate courses selected in consultation with the Program Director.

Admissions checklist
Entry requirements
McGill Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies minimum (all applicants, regardless of country): a Bachelor's degree (or equivalent as recognized by McGill) in a subject closely related to the one selected for graduate studies; unless otherwise specified, a Master's program requires a four-year undergraduate degree in a related area, and a doctoral (PhD) program generally requires a Master's degree in a related area; minimum CGPA 3.0 out of 4.0, or GPA 3.2 out of 4.0 in the last two years of full-time studies (some departments require more). Credentials are assessed for equivalency with a McGill degree. Source: https://www.mcgill.ca/gradapplicants/how-apply || Department admission requirements (https://coursecatalogue.mcgill.ca/en/graduate/medicine-health-sciences/biomedical-sciences/): Excellent laboratory facilities for basic and applied research are available in the Department and in the laboratories of associated staff located elsewhere on campus. The Department operates a network of high-performance workstations and well-equipped mechanical and electronics workshops. Basic research in the Department concentrates on the application of quantitative engineering analysis methods to basic biomedical research problems. Currently active areas of research include: - neuromuscular and postural control; - muscle mechanics; - the vestibular system; - oculomotor control; - the auditory system; - joint prosthetics; - biomaterials; - artificial cells and organs; - cell and tissue engineering; - drug delivery; - microencapsulation; - microbiome and probiotics; - functional food and neutraceuticals; - medical imaging; - microfluidics; - nanomedicine and nanotechnology; - bioinformatics in genomics and proteomics. Staff members are also active in more applied research related to the development of quantitative analysis tools and instruments for biomedical research. Areas of activity here include: signal analysis, system identification, modelling, simulation and parameter estimation, image processing, pattern recognition, ultrasound, and biorobotics. The Department offers M.Sc. and Ph.D. thesis options through the interfaculty program Biological and Biomedical Engineering. The Department also offers a M.Sc. (Applied) in Translational Biomedical Engineering. For additional information, see the Biomedical Engineering website.
