Everything you need to know about the UK Student Visa — documents, timelines, CAS numbers, and what to expect at the biometrics appointment.
The UK remains one of the most popular study abroad destinations, attracting over 600,000 international students each year. Navigating the Student Visa (previously Tier 4) can feel daunting, but with the right preparation it is straightforward.
To apply for a UK Student Visa, you need a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from a licensed sponsor, proof of English language proficiency, evidence of financial support, a valid passport, and tuberculosis test results if applicable.
Your CAS is the most important document. It is a unique reference number issued by your university once you have accepted your offer and paid any required deposit. Your university will email you the CAS number along with the details recorded on it — check every field carefully.
You must prove you have enough money to cover your course fees (minus any deposits already paid) and living costs. For courses in London, you need at least GBP 1,334 per month for up to nine months. Outside London, the requirement is GBP 1,023 per month.
Apply online on the UK Government website no more than six months before your course starts. After submitting the form and paying the visa fee plus the Immigration Health Surcharge, you will book a biometrics appointment at a visa application centre.
Processing typically takes three weeks for a standard application. You can pay for priority (five working days) or super priority (next working day) processing if available in your country.
Once approved, you will receive a vignette sticker in your passport valid for 90 days. After arriving in the UK, you must collect your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) from the post office specified in your decision letter within 10 days.
