A side-by-side comparison of the three main English proficiency tests — cost, difficulty, university acceptance, and turnaround times.
Choosing the right English proficiency test can save you time, money, and stress. The three most widely accepted tests for study abroad are IELTS Academic, PTE Academic, and the Duolingo English Test (DET).
IELTS Academic is the most universally accepted test, recognised by virtually every university in the UK, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. It costs approximately USD 240-260 and results arrive in 13 days (or 5-7 days for computer-based). The test has four sections: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking (conducted face-to-face with an examiner).
PTE Academic is fully computer-based and uses AI scoring, which means results are available within two business days. It costs approximately USD 200-230. PTE is widely accepted in Australia, the UK, and New Zealand, and increasingly in Canada and the US. Many students find PTE easier for speaking since you speak into a microphone rather than to a person.
The Duolingo English Test is the most affordable option at USD 65 and can be taken from home. Results arrive within 48 hours. However, acceptance is more limited — while over 4,500 institutions accept it, some top universities and most visa applications still require IELTS or PTE.
For UK and Australian universities, all three tests are generally accepted. For Canadian immigration, IELTS is the safest choice as it is accepted for both university admission and Express Entry. For US universities, check individual requirements as acceptance varies significantly.
Our recommendation: if budget is tight and your target universities accept it, start with Duolingo. If you need broad acceptance, go with IELTS. If you struggle with face-to-face speaking tests, PTE may be your best option.
